beauty is not for the lazy

There’s a Chinese saying that goes “there is no ugly woman, only lazy one”. There can’t be any more truth to this.

So I recently started this almost military-style beauty regime which has since kept my skin extremely happy. My beautician who threads my brows even commented that my face has become more radiant recently! *yay*

What is this regimental process? Well, it’s basically a a simple step of putting on a paper mask every night. I’ll wash off the residue after 20 mins of masking, and apply my night serum and cream before heading to head. Yes, it’s really not that miraculous, but it does require a level of commitment to execute it.

The masks which I’ve been using are:

  • My Beauty Diary, a Taiwanese brand. They’ve got a pretty extensive range that’s supposed to boost your skin in different manner and I usually rotate the variety on a daily basis. My favourites from the range are the Black Pearl, the Imperial Bird’s Nest and the Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizing

  • Leaders Insolution, a Korean brand. What I like about this brand is that their masks are the hydrogel type so it fits snugly on your face. I’ve only tried the Aquaringer which is supposed to hydrate the skin, and the Meta-Tox which is used to brighten the skin. The only downside about this brand is that they’re freaking expensive. They cost double of My Beauty Diary; so I only use them once a week.

Hopefully these provide good tips for better and more radiant skin. Now let’s abandon laziness and strive toward a more beautiful us together!

Run baby run!

Gosh! It’s been nearly 2 years of non-updates! We’ve been such busy people, haven’t we?

Well… as a quick catch-up, I’ve been very (extremely) into running these days. Heck! I even completed a full marathon, 3 half-marathons and countless 10km fun races in the span of 2 years. Surely that’s a pretty valid excuse for not being able to contribute to this blog huh?

Anyway, to revive this little pet project of ours, I thought what a better way than to start with a review of running shoes I own. Do note that I’m a diehard Nike girl so it’s nothing but Nike shoes for me.

Here goes:

Nike Flyknit Free 4.0

This is my favourite design and I own 4 pairs! All in different beautiful colours of course! They’re lightweight, durable, fits snugly on the feet and super easy to run with. The design is perfect for people with broad feet and like the feeling of almost barefoot running. I wear them for races, for leisure runs, for training runs, for walking around while on holidays.

Some may say that the lack of support on the arch would be an issue for flat-footers. But hey, I’m flat-footed and I ran all my marathon races in my Flyknit Free. So shut up, take my money and run!

Nike Flyknit Lunar Tempo 1

This is supposed to be good for flat-footers who want to do long runs. I must say that it does give great support and you can literally feel the bounciness of the sole while on the roads. I usually alternate them with the Free 4.0.

One thing to note though…the design is slightly smaller than most of the other Nike models so do get half a size bigger if you’re considering it.

Nike Flyknit Lunar 2 + Lunar 3

I would say these are good for new Nike converts. They’re pretty, cushy and really roomy too. Perfect for daily short runs. Its only downside… the shoes tend to “heat up” during longer runs so your feet gets really warm and that makes it uncomfortable to continue running.

These days, I use the Lunar 2 for track interval sessions and the Lunar 3 is my exclusive gai gai (going out) accessory when I’m in for the sneaker look.

Nike Flyknit Lunarglide 5

This is my most disappointing pair of Nike Flyknits and I blame it on the salesperson. He insisted that I get a size bigger than my usual and me being such a trust person, decided to go with his recommendation. Bad move!! It ended up being too big for me despite wearing thicker socks; and what I received in return were blisters and immense discomfort.

These shoes have since been inherited by the niece who’s happily wearing them for her runs and badminton sessions.

Update to Red and Wavy

A week after the perm and colour, I was back in the chair cos I was just useless at managing permed hair.

The stylist, Zenn, very kindly trimmed my hair and taught me how to get the “wet look” using oil and gel.

For a few days, I experimented and am now settling nicely into a routine with my red and wavy hair (as opposed to the frazzled situation previously).

I was worried about using oil on my hair in this scorching weather and in warm yoga classes but it turned out ok!

As in, I didn’t have oil all over my face / forehead, no icky oily hair after 2 yoga classes on Saturday and generally looking presentable after a day out. Yay!

(The flip side is that the red is now slowly settling into warm auburn colour. It is, as one friend Harleen said, looked less “chemically” but part of me still wished for the more dramatic red. Oh well!)

Mineral Sunscreen

With the scorching weather in Singapore these days, I start to perspire even before I step out of the bathroom. So the usual arsenal of sunblock and sun protection lotion tends to get wiped off along with the sweat before powder goes on.

Am trying out the ultra lightweight sunscreen recommended by a client-turned-friend. This is the Clarins UV Plus HP Day Screen High Protection.

I used a small dab all over the face. Light and just a little goes a long way. Definitely doesn’t make my face shine as much as the usual lot that I have. So I went without powder today.

Let’s see how this works for the rest of the coming week!

Red and Wavy

Ooh short hair that is red and wavy. I did this on a Friday afternoon, had to wait for at least 24 hours before I could shampoo at home. Which meant that the whole of Saturday, I went through the icky I-can’t-wash-my-hair stage despite doing 2 yoga classes and a dinner. Ugh!

Then on Sunday morning, I happily did my wash and took a picture of the new hairstyle when it was still rather damp with lots of leave-in condition and serum. As always with new haircuts, I put on a nice outfit (as opposed to the usual tee-shirt and shorts weekend wear) with a red silk Tocca blouse.

On Tuesday, I tried air-drying the hair (yes, it went all poofy on me when dried naturally!) and styled it before meetings with lots (LOTS) of leave-in conditioner and leave-in treatment water AND soft wax.  Took a bit more work than my wash-and-dry style but it was totally manageable. Phew!

Verdict? Hmm, I think I look a little more grown up with the waves. 🙂

The new lip colour, Pink Honey (a brown-rose coloured lipstick) from Clinique goes fabulously with this hairdo!

Lightweight Frames for Reading Glasses

Made my 2nd pair of reading glasses a fortnight ago. I wanted an inexpensive pair to serve as back-up in case I lose my first pair.

But after trying 10 to 12 frames, I eventually settled for the same brand of frames as my first pair. It’s a band from Korea called Pescara. Light and thin. They also have the right size for my face.

Left: Second pair with purple frames.
Right: The first pair in brown tortoise shell.

Not the cheapest band of frames but really affordable.

Lime and Yoghurt Cleanser

I had some homemade yoghurt left in the fridge. Been there a couple of weeks and I didn’t want to risk consuming it as food. So I decided to use it as a cleanser.

Emptied the jar of old yoghurt into a small dish.

Cut and squeezed juice from one lime into the yoghurt. (Warning: the latter will look even more dodgy!)

Mixed with fingers and apply onto face just like my lotion cleanser or make-up remover. Left on face for a few minutes before rinsing.

With the remaining mixture, added a scrubbing agent to turn this into a yoghurt body scrub. I used The Body Shop’s Spa Wisdom adzuki bean and rice grains. (Tip: Either use a larger dish or bowl, or add only in the bathroom. Will minimise the risk of spillage en route to the bathroom.)

Scrubbed all over and rinsed under the shower. Done!

I didn’t use any commercial facial cleanser – neither before nor after the lime-yoghurt cleanser. Just followed up with toner and the usual routine.

The face was clean and looked fresher! The nose area felt a lot less bumpy and a couple of white heads that had been lurking had been tightened. Success!

Cleansing Brush

Am trying out a cleansing brush to help me manage the community of white and blackheads on my face, particularly on the nose and cheeks. It’s very soft and tiny, so I have to go over my face a couple of times using small circular motion.

Made in Japan, this little brush comes with its own storage box. In the picture above, I’ve put it against a lipstick for size.

I’ve tried it with a facial foam and without the foam, just in a wet face after cleaning off makeup. It works well either way! Can feel less bumps on the noise after the cleansing routine. Yay!

The Haan that got away

Was at the outlets today and found these red suede Cole Haan pumps with stacked wooden heels for a mere $39.97.

Unfortunately The Husband was also with me, and he deemed them impractical, that I wouldn’t wear them enough. I have to say that I couldn’t disagree… And back on the shelf they went.

Sad face.

Killer Deal: Ralph Lauren Booties

Miss Dressy is in town to visit, and while at the Outlets, I chanced upon these booties at Ralph Lauren for…. $24.98. But get this: I received an additional 25% off (clearance item) plus 15% off (special coupon I printed online).

I paid a grand total of $15.92!

I’m REALLY happy, because I returned these two other pairs of booties I have been considering.

Gotta LOVE this Ralph Lauren store, especially since I scored a new pair of knee-high leather boots a few months ago too!

Care for Red

Two days after colouring my hair red, the colour still runs. Am not sure if it’s my shampoos that are causing the colour run.

I decided to try Klorane’s shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair. It lathered well.  I also didn’t see much red on the run when I rinsed off the shampoo nor conditioner.

Let’s see how the hair colour looks a week from today…!
